Mathematics

In Mathematics, we develop our students’ thinking, understanding, competence and confidence with numbers, shapes and measurement.

At St Brendan’s we believe that all students can achieve high standards given the right time, support and opportunity and that it is a fundamental right of every student to be numerate. We encourage and foster skills that allow students to learn independently, think critically and make responsible decisions. A strategy we employ to ensure quality mathematics instruction occurs, is the ongoing professional development of our teaching staff and the regular evaluation of teaching practices and programs.

In Mathematics we emphasis the development of conceptual understanding in all areas of numeracy. We develop our students’ knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts in number and algebra, measurement and geometry and statistics and probability.

Our teachers are committed to providing challenging and engaging learning experiences for all children. We recognise that children acquire knowledge at different rates and focus on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, communication, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills.
These capabilities enable our students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems relevant to their further education and everyday lives.
Our students participate in mathematical activities that have been sequenced to allow a positive development in attitude and skills in this Key Learning Area. We use a variety of equipment, hands-on materials and interactive resources to facilitate our students learning of all mathematical concepts. All teaching and learning programs are based on the Mathematics K-6 Syllabus.

We cater for a wide variety of students:

  • Students with Special Education Needs: Collaborative curriculum planning allows our dedicated teachers to determine the most appropriate curriculum options for our students with special education needs in keeping with their learning needs, strengths, goals and interests
  • Higher Ability Students: Higher Ability students have specific learning needs that may require adjustments to the pace, level and content of the curriculum. Our school offers differentiated educational opportunities that will assist in meeting the needs of such students, including the opportunity for specialised enrichment and extension.

How can you help your child at home?

Please take the time to download the Parent Booklet which contains many helpful Mathematics games and everyday activities which can easily be done with your child at home. This will help your child to build their confidence in Mathematics and assist them to grow to their full potential.

At various times throughout the school year, we will offer Parent Workshops to assist you in ways that you can help your child develop their Mathematical understanding at home.
